This is the personal blog of the artist behind PoppyPhotoDesign.com, aka Poppy Photography. I am a 30-something married feminist who lives in Oregon. I was raised by parents who grew up in the 60s, and given a steady diet of British humor and other silly things for most of my life. As a result, the things I find amusing tend to be a little… off, shall we say?
As a child, I used to write short stories. As an adult, I still enjoy writing, but I find that it is a much slower process than it used to be, and therefore, I prefer more visual arts. I am a computer person by profession, and on my own time, I photograph and scrap the world around me on my computer.
I yearn to have actual conversations about actual subjects; I find that most people shy away from potentially divisive topics, and that makes it hard to discuss anything more interesting than the weather or how one is getting on in the new house.

Hi Poppy,
I came across your website whilst doing research for an essay. I’m a 40 something photography student. I recently gave up my 23 year long career as a graphic designer to retrain as an art teacher. I’m married and a mum.
I can say, speaking from experience, the design profession is still a very male world to try to be successful in, as a woman.
I’m told this and I am starting to see more women exhibited in galleries and that the imbalance is being addressed. I can’t help but wonder though, if it is a token gesture to quiet the many talented women photographers who still do not receive the acclaim they deserve. I guess only time will tell on that one. Two thirds of my class are women, how many of them will make a good living out of the profession of their choice compared to the male students? Again only time will tell.
I do think if you are born female you are a feminist, it’s a shame the word has been turned into something to be politically afraid of.
I do believe, or maybe it’s hope, that one day gender will not be an issue in creativity or day to day life. I hope I live long enough to see it.
